People hunt for a number of reasons. Hunters in different nations engage in whitetail deer hunting for sport. This does not mean that only whitetail deer are hunted other species found around the world include sambar, fallow, rusa, sika, and wapiti. The seasons and length of hunting allowed across the world differs. The duration of the seasons is dependent on two factors. The factors are health and population of the deer herds. Other factors include the number of licensed hunters. Different hunting weapons are allowed in different seasons. Among weapons authorized for use in different seasons include muzzleloaders, bows and firearms.

During bows only season hunters are not supposed to use muzzleloaders or firearms. During the archery season the allowed type of bows differ according to prevailing rules. Authorities charged with controlled hunt recognize compound and recurve bows as deer hunting weapons. Each weapon is authorized for use in different seasons and countries differ on the type of weapons allowed. Failure to observe such rules could result into a law suit.

Some people hunt to sustain themselves. Rules imposed on survival hunting are not similar to those observed by recreational hunters. Typical rules revolve on weapons and hygiene. Survival hunters are required to have stalking certificate and a meat hygiene certificate before they are allowed to operate in some jurisdictions. Additional requirements include possession of larders which meet the required standards and are registered as food businesses with the concerned authorities.

Hunting requires skill and experience. Most sport deer hunters start as amateurs with little skill and no experience at all. When at this stage the recommended weapon is a rifle. This is because it is the easiest weapon to use compared to bows which require experience. Start with rifles then gradually change to a weapon of choice provided it is not illegal.

Rifles too come at a cost just like other hunting weapons. Be sure to get one that fits, is effective and shots well in order to make the job easier. Buy one that fits within the operational budget. Prices of the rifles differ just like the models are different. Test each model and purchase one that easier to use.

Once weapon selection is taken care of the next step is to start practicing. This can be done from a bench where a person shoots at distant stationary targets. The starting distance should be 25 yards after which the distance should be gradually increased. When familiar with the gun move the target to about 100 yards. When a target is this far the training hunter should be able to work on their ability to hit distant targets.

Getting approval from the concerned authorities is amongst the last steps to making it into the class of hunters. A person gets closer to joining the group after have attended a safety course designed for hunters. Part of the course entails a four hour certification course and a written exam. Upon successful completion of the course a certificate is issued. With a certificate in hand the hunter can now embark on purchasing a permit for their intended hunting spree.
