Some Information On Aircraft Turbine Oil

By William Morris

Right now you are reading this article since you probably own a plane or in charge of maintaining one. Preventive maintenance is something that you want to practice, and apart from procedures, you also want to know about the best materials to use. One of these materials is aircraft turbine oil, which is crucial to overall engine health. If you want to know more about this component in engine maintenance procedures, then do read on.

Routine maintenance and use of high quality turbine oil is key to having and keeping an airworthy aircraft. Many of the high performance oils out there that will be marketed to you are specifically made for gas turbine engines. The two most popular brands are Aero Shell and Mobil for these kind of oils. It should be noted however, that other brands exist out there also.

Both car engines and also aircraft or plane engines provide propulsion for the vehicles that they are in. However, they differ in that the former runs on pistons and the latter one runs by way of turbines. In plane engines, a pressurized gas is created through the combustion of jet fuel. As these two engines are significantly different from each other, it goes without saying that they also require different kinds of oil.

As jet fuel experiences combustion at high pressure and also high speeds, you will require an oil that adapts to these set conditions also. In essence you will need am oil that has good to excellent thermal and oxidation properties that is much suited for jet engine types and models. Also go for oils that offer good protection against high temperature corrosion as well as anti wear properties.

It is good to make sure that the oil you have an eye on is approved by the proper authorities on the specified commercial usage that you have in mind. As such it will be a great advantage to you if the same oil is approved for military use and applications as well. This latter characteristic is really not that essential, but can give you additional peace of mind and confidence.

Depending on your budget or how deep your pockets are, you can go for OEM oils apart from market ones. OEM basically means original equipment manufacturer, and they can cost a little bit more than standard after market oils. It just means that if you have a Mitsubishi engine, you get the oil designed for that specific engine that is made and sold by the engine manufacturer themselves.

In terms of price you can save more if you do buy in bulk. If you do have the necessary storage facilities in place you can order by the drum. In so doing, make sure that the dealer does deal in these sizes and that they do provide transportation and handling also.

In sum this article has shown you some considerations to think of before buying any oil on the market. Always make sure that you leave no stone unturned in terms of looking for information so that you can have the most informed decision possible.
