The Many Uses And Applications Of Virtual Reality

By Steven Long

You observe someone standing in the middle of a room, his face obscured by a wraparound headset and his hands enclosed in data gloves. He seems to be looking everywhere at once and walking zombie like with his hands outstretched, as if touching something only he can see. To you, he may seem unhinged. But him, he has been completely transported to another dimension, in a world called virtual reality katy tx.

Virtual reality is its own definition. The first part of the twosome establishes that it doesnt exist in the physical world. It is artificially contrived and exists only in the mind. Reality implicates the multisensory input received. The visual, auditory, and tactile or haptic sensory overload makes the experience seemingly true to life.

Virtual reality environments are actuated through a head mounted display that provides a 3D visual experience and stereo sound. To heighten the sensations, it also has head motion tracking sensors so that the vision will accordingly adjust depending on where youre looking. Moreover, this also features a lens insert for those who need prescription eyeglasses. There are also haptic gloves that transmit virtual sensations and touch. This equipment enables a person to look around, move around, and interact with the virtual features and items in the artificial world.

VR is on a different plane from movies, for example. For one, the extremely limited scope of the movie screen and the digital surround sound enables us to put things into perspective. For one, we wont have to worry that a particularly vindictive ghost will suddenly crawl out from our TV sets into our living room. The line between reality and artificiality is pretty much drawn in bold.

VR, however, is a completely visceral experience. You will no longer be able to rely on your common sense to persuade yourself that whatever is played isnt really happening. Since it is thoroughly multi sensory, you may course down a roller coaster in the VR world and still scream as if your life depended on it because theres just no telling where real life begins and simulation ends.

Because of its singular features, VR has uses and advantages in a wide array of applications. For instance, it is used in medicine and therapy to address several psychological conditions like phobias and posttraumatic stress disorders. If youre phobic of spiders, for example, you will be gradually inoculated through virtual images of these creepy crawlies until such time that they become a normal, everyday thing to you. People who suffer debilitating trauma from certain events, like nine eleven, are made to live it out again. This is supposed to bring a sense of closure and so was a popular treatment during its heyday.

The usual import, as you may guess, is on entertainment. From video games to sports, VR is your trusty go to application. For example, there is a racing simulation game where you can choose a formula one racing car and battle it out on a reality inspired racecourse. There are motion thrill rides such as on roller coasters or on whitewater rapid adventures. Other sports and activities such as horseback riding, ice skating, tennis, baseball, and all other possible applications exist.

Its most significant application, however, is on business and industry. VR a very nifty way of advertising, especially by architectural and real estate firms, and it is no doubt a trusty way to up the ante on competitors. A more palpably useful application is done by trainee surgeons and pilots. Imagine the willies as they embark on their technical trades for the first time. When done incorrectly, it would spell out a complete disaster. Because of its way of bringing a story to life, its also widely applied in journalism and the arts.

The immersive experience provided by this application indeed has such palpable benefits and advantages. When used intelligently and responsibly, they can improve lives for the better. Should virtual reality become the new reality, we should make sure we have nothing to fear and doubt.
