Shelters Like The Humane Society San Jose Del Cabo Are The Best Places To Find Furry Companions

By Michelle King

Cats and dogs are living beings that must be cared for. That requires a huge commitment. Some have a specific breed in mind when they start looking for a new pet. Many people only consider pure bred animals, and others only consider puppies and kittens. Some special people choose the adoption route and get their pets from a shelter such as the Humane Society San Jose Del Cabo. There are a number of reasons why this is a great choice.

You'll save a life when you make this choice. Every year in the United States nearly three million animals are euthanized because they've been left at shelters that only have room for a certain number of animals. More animals are abandoned than are adopted at these shelters. That means when you choose a pet from a shelter you are effectively rescuing that animal from death. You are also freeing room at the shelter so they can accept another animal.

The selection is huge at a shelter. You can find a great pet no matter what size, shape, temperament, or age you are looking for. If you prefer a baby, there are puppies and kittens to choose from. Shelters even have a selection of purebred animals, looking for a new home, most of the time. Rarely is an animal abandoned at a shelter because of a behavioral problem or a violent incident.

Most of them find themselves there by no fault of their own. The owners bring them because they can't afford a pet anymore, are moving, are getting divorced, or are surrendering the pet of an owner who has passed away. These kinds of animals make great pets for the right families.

Shelter animals are good economic choices. If you buy a pure bred kitten or puppy from a breeder, you're going to pay hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. What you are actually spending the money on is the bloodline, the right to register the cat or dog with national organizations, and sometimes, the chance to show it.

Breeders charge even more if the breeds they raise are among the most popular with purchasers. Unless you plan to show your cat or dog, adoption makes the most sense. A lot of shelter animals have already been house trained and are comfortable in family situations. If you decide you want an adult dog, you will already know exactly how large it is going to be.

Purchasing an animal from a pet store or flea market will almost ensure that you are buying a puppy or kitten from a mill. Mills are no more than breeding factories run by people who are only interested in how much money they can make. Conditions are not humane.

Breed mothers are frequently kept caged all their lives with no chance to establish relationships with humans. After they get too old to breed, these females are discarded by killing them, auctioning, or abandoning them. No one should support one of these mills in any way.
