Tips For Deciding If One Of The Shelties For Sale Is Right For You

By Jessica Butler

A lot of dog lovers are pretty opinionated when it comes to which canines make the best pets. Some swear by the cute and cuddly variety who love to be held and petted. Others are sure the big, athletic animals are best for active families. Sometimes people assume the puppies they purchase will have the characteristics they love, but find that the animals are something very different in reality. If you are intrigued by the Shetland breed, you should do the research to find out if shelties for sale are a good fit.

The big brown eyes on these dogs will melt the hardest of hearts, and it is true that the animal's nature is gentle and loving. Shetlands generally get used to strangers who just want to pet their silky fur and shake their paws. While they tolerate this kind of behavior well, Shelties can be a bit standoffish with strangers. They do love their families however, and even get along well with existing family pets.

When you ask Sheltie owners what one characteristic stands out about their pet, they usually mention intelligence. These dogs are very smart. They will get bored, destructive, and unhappy unless they are constantly stimulated. You will be surprised at how well they excel at even the most challenging games. Shetlands have a natural instinct to herd. They are jumpers that need plenty of room to run and play.

It naturally follows that, if you own a Sheltie, you have to be ready to give it plenty of exercise. Just opening the back door and letting it out into the yard is not going to be enough. If you want a dog that can be taught advanced obedience and commands, this is the animal for you. Before making a commitment however, you have to make sure you have the time and energy to give this dog the stimulation it requires.

This is a dog that can be high strung. They have a tendency to start at sudden noises and don't have a huge tolerance for children who want to play too rough. When you bring a puppy into a home with a lot of loud noises, confusion, and tension, you are probably raising a nervous, jumpy dog.

A Sheltie might be a good fit for you if you love a challenging, intelligent animal with a sweet and loving nature. People who work at home, have flexible schedules, and can handle the physical demands a Sheltie makes are also good prospects. These dogs have beautiful coats, but they have to be groomed nearly every day in order to keep them in top condition.

You should consider another breed if you don't have a lot of patience for shyness and sensitivity. If you have to leave your pet home alone all day, this is not the dog for you. You have to commit to giving your pet plenty of physical and mental stimulation.

Shetlands are beautiful animals. They are smart, quick to learn, devoted, and gentle. They are not for everybody however. Before you fall in love with the way they look, you should carefully consider the way they think.
